Confirming Chronic Infection

Viruses are made of proteins, and particular proteins can only be seen with enteroviruses. Viral protein 1 (VP-1) is the most prominent and important viral protein found in all enteroviruses.

Since EV replicates in the GI tract, stomach tissue samples can be stained for the presence of VP-1.

Stomach cells that stain brown are cells infected by enterovirus. Cells not infected by EV will not stain brown.

Below are magnified pictures of stained stomach tissue. Biopsy #1 is from a healthy volunteer whose stomach contains no enterovirus, and Biopsy #2 is from a sick patient whose stomach contains many EV infected cells.
